I wrote this song in the Fall of 2013 as part of a writing assignment during a music conference for artists and venues. Each artist picked a random topic out of a jar, and were told to write a song about it before the conference's end. My topic read, "What is there left to be said?", and this is what immediately poured out of me.

The One I Love
Lyrics and Music by Sarah Golden ©2013

I still can't marry the one I love
I'm sure you've probably heard enough
Maybe you wish I'd just shut up
But I still can't marry the one I love

Some people pick me apart
They don't know a thing about my heart
Right now I've got nothing to lose
And this ain't a life someone would choose

Cuz' I still can't marry the one I love
I guess seven years just ain't enough
I'm not in search of sympathy
Give me my rights and leave me be

Cuz' I still can't marry the one I love

Remove the altar from the state
My life will not be second rate
If we fought as hard for harmony
As we do for so-called sanctity

Then I would marry the one I love
The girl I place nothing above
The one I'd die to have and hold
Prize and protect 'til we grow old

Still I can't marry the one I love
